BIJ Stamm was the ultimate entrepreneur. He left Europe as a young man determined to fulfill his dreams in the United States. After struggling through the Depression he began to see that dream come true. In 1932 BIJ Stamm opened Oil Heat Utilities in New York City selling high-pressure steam boilers to the garment industry.

1945

By the end of World War II, with the Palisade Park Manufacturing facility at full capacity, the company decided to look for new opportunties beyond the United States. In 1945, Kresno Stamm Canada Ltd is established. A distribution warehouse is opened in Montreal on Marie Anne St to distribute the burners manufactured in New Jersey.

Seeking a plant in Canada to manufacture the 'Ball Flame' burners, a 40,000 sq.ft plant is rented in Granby, Quebec.

The Powrmatic Trademark is registered in the UK.

1950

Kresno Stamm Europa NV is formed recognising the post war potential for automatic oil heating to replace the coal and wood fire methods used at that time.

Powrmatic Inc (US) incorporates. BIJ Stamm purchases a struggling boiler manufacturer located in Finksburg, Maryland. The business is restructured and oil fired unit heaters are manufactured.

Powrmatic Canada open a distribution branch in Quebec City.

The Canadian company continues to dominate the HVAC market and opens an additional distribution branch in Ottawa.

BIJ Stamm's son, Arthur, incorporates Stamm International Corporation (SIC) and consolidates the three operating companies in the United Kingdom, United States and Canada under its umbrella. Powrmatic Ltd (UK), Powrmatic Canada Ltd, and Powrmatic Inc. (US) become wholly owned subsidiaries of SIC.

Powrmatic Canada enters the residential and commerical air conditioning distribution market and expands its product offering to wood burning stoves, fireplaces, warm air furnaces, flues and chimneys.

Powrmatic Canada outgrows the Durocher St. facility. The company purchases a 40,000 sq.ft plant in Terrebonne. The Montreal wholesale operations move to a new location on 19th Ave in Montreal.

Powrmatic US expands its manufacturing facility in Finksburg, Maryland.

Powrmatic UK acquires the business and assets of Tanaire Ltd and introduces a range of hot water/steam unit heaters.

Powrmatic UK extends its product range introducing suspended gas unit heaters, cast iron boilers and hot water/steam unit heaters.

Powrmatic UK acquires the business and assets of Fire Ventilation manufacturer Lidiard & Skelton, based in Brownhills, Staffordshire. In addition the company expands its product line to include a 'System' Range of twin wall flue products.

Powrmatic US purchases the business and assets of Eltron Corporation of Cherry Hill, NJ, a manufacturer of electrostatic and mechanical filtration units and moves it to Finksburg, Maryland.

Powrmatic UK opens distribution networks in Japan and establishes a foothold in the market for its System 250 flue range.

Powrmatic UK expands its product line to include the new Thermal Econimizer Series from 200,000 to 4,000,000 Btu.

Powrmatic UK acquires the business and assets of Reclaire and merges the business into Ilminster.

Powrmatic UK acquries the business and assets of Heating Controls and Devices in Dublin which becomes Powrmatic Ireland and opens distribution warehouse and trade counter facility in the Tallaght district of South Dublin.

Stamm International Corporation acquires the business and assets of Selkirk Manufacturing Limited, Barnstaple, England, establishing SFL. The acquisition includes the portfolio of products developed, manufactured and marketed by Selkirk for over 40 years.

Powrmatic Canada further expands the Montreal branch to 44,000 sq.ft on Ray Lawson Blvd.

Powrmatic UK consolidates all production facilities onto the Hort Bridge site in Ilminster.

Powrmatic Canada opens a new distribution center of 10,000 sq.ft in London Ontario.

Powrmatic UK introduces the second generation of the NV gas unit heater NVx.

Powrmatic Canada relocates the Halifax branch to a larger 10,000 sq.ft facility in Dartmouth, and adds an additional 10,000 sq.ft of warehouse space to the Quebec City branch.

Powrmatic UK introduces a new range of oil and gas fired warm air cabinet heaters, the CPx Range. It also introduces a range of air conditioning units to provide full HVAC solutions in the UK.

Arthur Stamm dedicates a Physics laboratory and establishes a scholarship fund in his father's name at LaGuardia Community College in Long Island City N.Y to continue his fathers legacy of helping future generations of young people.

At the dedication ceremony Arthur Stamm commented:

'if there's a lesson to be learned from my father's life, it's not to be afraid to take risks; don't fear failure; and of course, there's hard work, a winning smile and a sincere handshake. That is the basis of our company today"

Powrmatic UK purchases the freehold of Powrmatic Ireland's Dublin warehouse facility

Powrmatic UK expands the Hort Bridge facility with a 25,750 sq.ft warehouse to store over 600 products to keep up with the demand for Powrmatic heating products.

Stamm International and its subsidiaries implement a global rebranding strategy to strengthen and unify their branding. The rebranding is part of the company’s strategy to focus on furthering each company’s position as market and industry leaders. The harmonized international brand provides better global recognition for all companies and products and better informs SIC customers worldwide of its global capabilities.

SFL implements factory layout changes to increase commercial flue production capacity and productivity.

Prior to World War II the strong demand for modern oil heating equipment persuaded BIJ Stamm to open his first major manufacturing facility in Palisades Park, New Jersey. It was there that Kresno Stamm Manufacturing Company began and the kerosene fired, vaporizing type oil burner, the Ball Flame was developed and patented by BIJ Stamm. These burners served as the precursor to the modern day automatic oil burner.

The Powrmatic Trademark is registered in Canada. Also Kresno Stamm Canada expands and moves the Montreal office to the Sun Life building.

Realising that war torn Europe had to rebuild its industrial base, BIJ Stamm opened an office and warehouse in Amsterdam, 91 Amstel Road, supplying oil burners from the USA.

1951

Kresno Stamm Europa NV purchases its first European factory in Nijmegen, Holland supplying oil burners throughout Europe. Continuing his overseas expansion, BIJ Stamm opens a warehouse and office in Whitechapel, London, initially importing oil burners from the Nijmegen plant. It is there that the first fully automatic floor mounted warm air heater for commerical and industrial applications is developed.

Kresno Stamm Canada relocates to Du Harve Street in Montreal. There, the company starts to manufacture automatic type oil burners. These were sold to heating contractors which began the company's wholesale distribution business.

Throughout his career, BIJ Stamm commuted regularly between the United States and Europe. In 1953 he receives an award from United Airlines for flying 100,000 miles and joins what is probably the first frequent flyer program, The 100,000 Mile Club. This was during the days of 16-hour propeller flights to England with stops at Gander and Shannon.

The Powrmatic Trademark is registered in the U.S.

The CA (Commercial Aire) range of oil fired heaters was developed in England. This was an innovative product which would revolutionize the space heating market and which rightly claims to be the forerunner of today's modern heaters. The success of Powrmatic's CA range led the company to establish it's first U.K dedicated manufacturing facility based in Reading.

Powrmatic Canada purchases a larger building on Durocher St in Montreal, housing manufacturing and the Montreal wholesaling operations. Product lines expand to include hot air heaters, water heaters and boilers.

Powrmatic US launches the manufacturing of the oil fired unit heaters at the Finksburg Plant.

The company transitions from Kresno Stamm to Powrmatic.

In Europe, the demand for the air heater line outgrows the Reading UK manufacturing plant. Powrmatic Ltd moves to a new bespoke manufacturing facility in Ilminster, Somerset.

Powrmatic Canada acquires the business and assets of Filter & Heating Supply Co. in Toronto which becomes its foothold in the Toronto market.

Powrmatic UK introduces Powrvents manufactured in Ilminster. This adds commerical and industrial ventilation to the product line.

Powrmatic UK introduces a range of boilers to the market.

Powrmatic US expands its product range to include indirect oil fired make-up air heaters for the commercial and industrial market with capacities up to 2,000,000 Btu outputs.

Powrmatic UK purchases additional land and a factory at Hortbridge in Ilminster.

Powrmatic Canada purchases the business and assets of Valin Distribution Co, an electrical wholesaler in Quebec City, and integrates it into the Quebec City branch. Electrical supply wholesaling is added to the other branches.

Powrmatic Canada adds central AC, heat pumps and ventilation products to its product offering.

Powrmatic US expands its product range to include oil and gas fired TE Air Rotation units whilst Powrmatic UK designs and launches a range of radiant tube heaters.

Powrmatic Canada purchases a new 32,000 sq.ft building on Ray Lawson Blvd for its head office and Montreal Branch.

Powrmatic US purchases the Circ-Air line of small air turnover units for heating applications of approximately 10,000 to 50,000 sq.ft areas and moves production to Finksburg Maryland.

Powrmatic UK replaces the PGUH warm air heater range with its signature NV product.

Powrmatic UK transfers the manufacture of its flue products to the 100,000 sq.ft factory in Barnstaple.

Powrmatic Canada purchases a 22,000 sq.ft building that is transformed into a new state of the art facility for the Quebec City branch.

The flue and chimney division becomes SF Ltd, the 4th wholly owned subsidiary of Stamm International. The family is complete.

Powrmatic UK develops 1st generation of fully condensing gas unit heaters.

Powrmatic Canada moves the Toronto branch to a larger 27,000 sq.ft location. Quebec City branch increases its warehouse space by an additional 10,000 sq.ft.

Powrmatic's ventilation division contracted to supply the smoke and natural ventilation system at the London Aquatic Centre in the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, East London.

Powrmatic UK acquires the assets and IPR of smoke and heat exhaust ventilation product manufacturer SHEV Company Ltd.

Powrmatic Canada relocates the Ottawa branch to a larger facility in Gloucester.

Powrmatic CA expands its Montreal operation with the construction of a new 6,000 sq.ft warehouse facility

November 3, 2020 - Stamm International sells its Canadian distribution company, Powrmatic of Canada, to the Deschenes Group.

November 4, 2022 - Stamm International sells SFL to the Sphering Group.
